The Critically Endangered Clanwilliam cedar (Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis J.A. Marsh), found within the Cederberg Mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa, is confined to an area of approximately 250 km2 and at an altitude roughly between 800 and 1,500 meters above sea level, in rocky sandstone terrain. The number of Clanwilliam cedar trees have declined drastically due to historical logging, with further declines due to high fire frequency and intensity, low recruitment rate, seed predation, and climate change. The best approach is to assist the recruitment of new individuals within the natural population range.
Established in 2023, Sustainable Ceder is a registered Non-Profit Organisation composed of a team of passionate conservation-oriented people living and working in the heart of the Cederberg to save its natural habitats and species. Our main purpose is the development and implementation of a strategic and collaborative approach to the re-establishment of the Clanwilliam cedar tree. We will act as the central link between various organisations, partners, role-players, tourists, and communities within the Cederberg area. Through this integrated conservation model, we strive to increase the effectiveness of our conservation efforts while also uplifting the communities within the area.
Sustainable Ceder is committed to a range of cedar-conservation focused projects that will assist with the achievement of our objectives and overall goal of ensuring a self-sustainable Clanwilliam cedar population in the Cederberg. These micro-projects include:
- Nursery propagation;
- Manufacturing of planting equipment;
- Sapling planting;
- Monitoring, data capturing, and analysis;
- Environmental Education and Awareness initiatives; and
- Guided cedar experiences.
Sustainable Ceder works in partnership with the Cederberg Conservancy and CapeNature to conserve and revitalise the Clanwilliam cedar and its environment.
