Bakkrans Nature Reserve

New Cederberg Experience!

Bakkrans Nature Reserve is a unique Cederberg offering for visitors. When you reserve accommodation at Bakkrans, we guarantee total exclusivity and privacy to you (and your friends), at no extra cost. We undertake not to take in any other visitors while you are staying with us, regardless of how many cottages you booked or occupy. The entire reserve and its facilities are therefore allocated to you exclusively, to explore and enjoy in total privacy.

Bakkrans also offers a totally new way of experiencing the Cederberg. It’s an unspoilt, tranquil 6000ha wilderness where the highly endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and Cape Mountain Leopard roam freely.  Bakkrans was the very first research site of the Cape Leopard Trust, where they also photo-graphed their first leopard.

It is a remote wilderness which nestles deep in the rugged eastern Rooi Ceder-berg Karoo Park, where the true lover of the outdoors can get back to nature as it should be. It has magnificent mountain ranges with a rich and diverse variety of plant species, indigenous game, birds and other wildlife. Its earlier human history is captured in rock paintings that are thousands of years old. Artefacts that are thought to be ±100 000 years old have been found here.

ACCOMMODATION
A visit to Bakkrans is very far removed from your everyday tourist fare. The houses are traditionally thatched, stone-walled veld cottages, built with materials that were mostly obtained from the reserve. These self-catering stone cottages are unobtrusive and blend in perfectly with the natural surroundings. We have furnished them with furniture to reflect the lifestyle of herders, who stayed in this area during a bygone Cape frontier era. In all, the accommodation here is unpretentious, but comfortable with crisp white linen.

TO REACH BAKKRANS

We will transport you to Bakkrans (from Keurbosfontein farm) at no extra cost, if you do not have your own 4x4 available. A visit to Bakkrans makes ±80 kms of superb 4x4 tracks available to those of you who wish to travel in your own vehicles.
